The Insanity of Environmentalism

Posted in Liberalism, Philosophy on March 10, 2008 by Tadd Lumm

There is a great deal of insanity passed along today as serious thought. And it usually involves overreaction based on fear. Fear makes us do strange things and it usually causes people to act irrationally. Those who eschew reason for emotion will act in ways that border on insanity when in the grips of fear. And believe me when I say that there are plenty of people who are more than willing to give people reason to fear. There are government grants available and accolade at every turn. There are infomercials and tv specials, and of course there are a multitude of those oh-so-helpful public service announcements that try to make common sense sound esoteric. Those who might criticize these theories and fearmongering in general are immediately declared to be in the pocket of the respective industry which would be perceived to benefit the most from such skepticism. Of course those companies have been wise enough to hedge their bets and often are the chief lobbyists for the bureacracy which would certainly save us all from our impending doom. Of course, there is no doubt that the research that the government funds is 100% objective. Why wouldn’t the government pay researchers millions of dollars to discover that the world isn’t coming to an end? Of course, the answer is power. Political power is the reason that the environmental movement is so powerful today. It is the end around which politicians wish to use to control our lives. And it is fear that allows people to accept socialism and government control of their lives.
All these thoughts came to me after reading this ridiculous story on salon.com. http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2008/03/10/ask_pablo_kids/index.html  In it, a well meaning sheep er– environmentally conscious person, presents her “ethical dillemma” of whether to have another child. The question itself is so laughable and the arrogance and narcissism so palpable, I would dismiss this out of hand if it wasn’t answered so seriously. It also provides a devestating look into the insanity of the environmentalist movement. The truth is that if the radical projections of the global warming alarmists are true, one person can’t make a difference. And despite what you might have heard, changing all your lightbulbs to compact florescent won’t save the world. But of course, it sure feels great if you actually believe those things. I can save the world! Wow! I feel like a superhero as I change my lightbulb! But of course, this is a classic bait and switch game. Little changes won’t do much. But if they can “inspire” you to make a little change based on faulty premises, they can start you down the slippery slope. And don’t think this is just a slippery slope argument. The whole game is to repeat the same nonsensical argument often enough–and attack and discredit any dissenting opinions with guilty innuendo– until it is considered prima facie. If everyone in the world changed to compact florescent bulbs it wouldn’t do much. And if the United States were to totally destroy its economy by accepting the draconian economic changes in the Kyoto protocol, it still wouldn’t do much. But that wouldn’t curb the radical environmentalist’s enthusiasm for government regulation. The problem is that many well meaning people go along for the ride and take the global warming nonsense seriously. And they buy the idea that changing their lightbulbs will help save the environment. Or they take the silly notion that doing this or doing that will help. Or it won’t hurt. And they are buying the hype whether they realize it or not. They are sliding down the slippery slope, all the while feeling so good about themselves. What they really are doing is buying propoganda, and at a very steep price.
